An overwhelming number of 160 volunteers turned up for the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry - Young Entrepreneurs Network (SCCCI-YEN) WOW Day activity at Bright Vision Hospital on 19 November 2011. The event started with SCCCI-YEN members gathering at Yen Pei Hall. Volunteers were then split into smaller groups and brought to respective wards to befriend patients. With the assistance from social workers and nurses, the volunteers mingled well with the patients. Some volunteers also took the patients to barber room for their monthly haircuts. After their haircut sessions, patients were wheeled back to their room and given goodie bags. In the bags are items like Dove shower foam, 3 pairs of socks and a customized jacket for the patients. These gifts definitely warmed up their body and hearts. At 10am, the volunteers wheeled all participating patients to Yen Pei Hall to join in the variety of performances put up by SCCCI-YEN. A group made up of 5 children kick-started the event. Their ballroom dancing and impressive martial arts warmed up the audience immediately. The performance was followed by Zhejiang University’s representative performing a peacock dance. Dressed in a costume designed decorative peacock shimmering feathers, Ms Liao captivated the attention of everyone with her graceful moves. The activity concluded with everyone immersed in the beautiful mandarin song ‘月亮代表我的心’. After the 1-hour performance, patients were led back to their respective wards for their lunch. SCCCI-YEN also catered a vegetarian buffet for all the volunteers involved. The volunteers took the opportunity to share their experience with each other. At the end of the activity, Bright Vision Hospital gave each volunteer a bag of BVH souvenirs as an appreciation for the time and effort that they had put in. ~ By Community Engagement team |
